THE RICH YOUNG RULER
                                                 Matthew 19:16-22

  Introduction:
       A.  The story of this young man is one of the most interesting in the New Testament, and it is also one of the most tragic.
             1.  He approaches Jesus with anticipation, expectantly, and                               running.  He walks away without any hope, sorrowfully, and                         with a broken heart.
       B. Let's consider several aspects of this story.

  I.  Who was this young man?  He was :
       A.  young  Matt. 19:20,22
       B.  a ruler  Lk. 18:18
       C.  wealthy  Matt. 19:22
       D.  sincere  Mk. 10:17
       E.  humble  Mk. 10:17
       F.  reverent  Matt. 19:16
       G.  honorable  Matt. 19:20

II.  The young man's questions.  Matt. 19:16,20

  III.  Jesus reply.  Matt. 19:21

IV.  The young man's response.  Matt. 19:22
  V.  Let's suppose that you were to have a similar conversation with                  Jesus.  Would He tell you to give up something?  What would it be?
       A.  selfish interest, pride, love for money, time, negative attitude,                      etc?
       B.  Jesus stood there and watched this young man walk away.  No negotiating with Jesus.
       C.  Once you know what to do, you have two options:  reject Jesus                   and walk away or stay with Jesus and obey.

  Conclusion:
       A.  If you know what Jesus would have you give up, write it down                     right now.  Will you go away or  will you stay?
