        A.  Review the definition of the word “church” and the two primary senses used in
              the N.T.

        B.  Let’s consider several terms used in the scriptures to describe the church.

    I.  The church is the body of Christ.  Ephesians 1:22-23

        A.  This metaphor depicts the relationship we have with Christ and one another.
              1. Christ is the head of the body and we are members.  1 Corinthians 12:27-28;
                  Colossians 2:19

  II.  The church is the household/family of God.  Ephesians 2:19-22; 1 Timothy 3:15
        A.  This description depicts the family relationship we have with God.  Galatians

  III.  The church is the temple of God.  Ephesians 2:22; 1 Corinthians 3: 16-17
        A.  This concept as to do with a dwelling place of God.

IV.  The church is the kingdom of Christ.  Colossians 1:13

        A.  This term describes the government of the church.

  V.  The church is the  bride of Christ.  2 Corinthians 11:2; Rev. 19:6-9

        A.  Refers to our being betrothed (engaged) to Christ.


        A.  These terms illustrate our relationship with the Godhead.

        B.  They are not official titles of the church because the N.T. church has no titles.
