THE IMPORTANCE OF RIGHT ATTITUDES
Proverb 23:7 (499)
Introduction
A. As Christians worship and serve God in a local church, it’s important to have the
right attitudes.
1. The right attitudes can compensate for a lack of talent.
2. We know that we can change our behavior by changing our attitudes. Proverb
23:7
B. Let’s begin a series of lessons about attitudes. We’ll focus on what our attitudes should
be toward God, and what our attitudes should be toward self.
I. Attitudes toward God
A. We must understand that God is sovereign (Supreme, The Eternal Authority/Ruler).
1 Chronicles 29:10-12 (349)
B. We must have the right kind of love for God. Matthew 22:35-38 (723)
1. With all our heart means (Matthew 10:34-38-p711) first place in our affections.
2. With all our soul (eternal life quality)
3. With all our mind means our intellect fully committed.
II. Attitudes toward self
A. We must have a humble attitude.
1. When we realize our condition. Romans 3:23(831); 6:23a (833). Illustration of sin.
2. Examples of humility: Luke 18:10-14 (770)
B. We must have an obedient attitude.
1. An obedient attitude is built on our love for God.
1 John 5:2-3 (902): Keeping God’s commandments is a demonstration of our love.
1 John 2:3-5: We keep God’s commandments because our love is mature.
The apostle John shows that God sees a connection between love and obedience. So does
Jesus: John 14:15,23 (794). Why we have the provision of 1 John 1:7: the blood of Jesus
continually cleanses us from sin.
Closing: If we don’t have the right attitude toward God and self, we need to take one of two actions.
