THE SIN OF ENVY
                                                   Genesis 37-Selected Verses (31)


    Introduction

          A.  Let’s focus on a sinful attitude that can have a detrimental effect on our lives.

          B.  It starts with thoughts that can develop into a controlling sin.
                Examples:

          C.  This sin is envy. 

                1.  Definition:  1.  “ that discontented and mortified feeling which arises in the selfish
                     heart in view of the superiority of another, tantamount to jealousy.” (Unger’s Bible
                     Dictionary).  2.  “a feeling of discontent and ill will because of another’s
                     Advantages, possessions, etc.  (Webster’s New World Dictionary)

     I.   Let’s first consider the consequences of envy by using the brothers of Joseph as an
          example.  Genesis 37 (31)

          A.  Hatred.  Genesis 37:1-4

          B.  Resentment.  Genesis 37:5-8

          C.  The wrong focus.  Genesis 37:14-19

          D.  A broken fellowship.  Genesis 37:23-28

    II.  How do we effectively deal with envy?

          A.  Admit to God that we are envious and ask His forgiveness.  1 John 1:9 (900)

          B.  Be grateful for what God has given us. 1 Corinthians 12:12-20 (848)

          C.  Ask God to help us overcome our envy.  Philippians 4:6 (869); 1 Peter 5:8 (897)

          D.  Listen for and be open to the instructions of God.  Matthew 13:13-15 (713)
