A.  Questions submitted:  “Where are the dead?  Already in heaven/hell?  Sleeping?
Watching us as the rich man could see Lazarus?
         B.  Our lesson deals with this question:  Where does an unsaved person’s spirit go when
               he dies?

     I.  God’s word teaches us that the spirit of an unsaved person goes to the torment region of
hades when he dies.  Like 16:19-31 (768).  Remember that the KJV doesn’t
          distinguish between hell and hades.

          A.  Let’s focus on the condition of the rich man in hades.

                1.  He experienced torment.  Vv 23-25

                2.  He cried for mercy.  V24

                3.  He expressed concern for his five brothers who were lost.  Vv 27-31

                4.  He learned that he couldn’t escape from torment.  V26

II.  The spirit of the unsaved person will experience punishment in hades waiting for the
resurrection of his body and the judgment.  2 Peter 2:9 (898)

          A.  At the resurrection the spirit and the body will be united.  John 5:27-29 (783)

          B.  The judgment

                1.  As told by Jesus.  Matthew 25:31-33,41. (726)

                2.  Written by John the apostle.  Revelation 20:11-15 (916)

Judge will be Jesus.  John 5:27; Acts 17:31

Books (Rev. 20:12)  Book of Life, Book of Works (Deeds) and God’s Word

What will be cast into the lake of fire (hell)? See v13-15;1 Corinthians 15:26 (850)

                      Death and hades.

Conclusion:  When an unsaved person dies, his spirit goes to torments in hades and he
remains there suffering punishment until the bodily resurrection and judgment.
After the judgment the unsaved person goes to hell.
